Townsend first told us about her pregnancy in October last year, through an emotional video that recaps her career and all the obstacles she overcame. Then she said:
Life has a funny way of putting you exactly where you are supposed to be. I’m so excited to embark on the journey of motherhood!
Townsend’s last tournament was a first-round loss at the 2020 US Open. The American will enjoy a protected ranking when she decides to come back to the WTA Tour. Mothers returning to the circuit after giving birth are allowed to use their previous ranking to enter 12 tournaments over a three-year period following their comeback.
