Two months ago Serena Williams hinted a Wimbledon comeback, but the 23-time Grand Slam winner is missing from the tournament’s 2022 entry list.
On Friday, Wimbledon released the ladies’ singles entry list and Serena Williams’ name is nowhere to be seen. Her 41-year-old sister Venus Williams is also not there.
The last tournament the 40-year-old Serena played was Wimbledon 2021, where she exited in the first round. The American could have entered The Championships using a protected ranking. Now she still has the option to request a wildcard invitation, although it seems less and less likely that she will make a comeback in London.
If she doesn’t enter any tournaments before Wimbledon, regardless of whether she plays the grass-court Grand Slam or not, Williams will lose all her ranking points in July, because the WTA made a decision not to award any points at this year’s Championships as a response to the tournament’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players. Therefore, Williams, ranked No.276 at the moment, will be erased from the WTA rankings.
What is your opinion, have the Williams sisters silently retired or will they soon surprise us with a return?
