Less than two years after crossing paths with Arthur Borges in New York’s Central Park, Garbine Muguruza said ‘yes’ to the love of her life in a romantic setting of a hotel in Marbella, Spain.
In an exclusive interview with Hola magazine, the two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza revealed for the first time how her relationship with Borges started. While she was in New York for the 2021 US Open, she went for a casual walk in Central Park. That’s when Borges spotted her, wished her good luck at the tournament, and love sparks started flying immediately. The encounter ignited a profound connection and from that moment on they enjoyed romantic walks together in Central Park every day.
The couple made their relationship public during the 2021 Akron WTA Finals Guadalajara, when Borges was hugging and kissing champion Muguruza during the trophy ceremony. Earlier, he had also been spotted in the WTA star’s box during the September 27th – October 3rd Chicago Fall Tennis Classic.
Borges proposed to Muguruza in the Marbella Club Hotel, one of her favorite places, and she describes the engagement as a highly emotional and romantic moment that made her cry tears of joy.
The engagement news comes a little less than two months after Muguruza announced that she would be taking an extended break from tennis in order to focus on her private life. She will definitely not play Roland Garros and Wimbledon, as she’s skipping the clay and grass season to enjoy time with family and friends.
The wedding is planned to take place in 2024, preferably somewhere by the sea in Spain.
The 38-year-old Borges is half Spanish and half Finnish. He used to be married to a beautiful Finnish figure skater, Kiira Korpi. They were together for a total of eleven years. Korpi announced their separation on Instagram in the second half of June 2021. So, a little over two months later Borges started the romance with Muguruza.
