Friends, mothers, and rivals: Kerber to battle Wozniacki for spot in Indian Wells quarterfinals

Old friends and rivals, Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki, will play each other in the round of 16 at the BNP Paribas Open. The former leads their head-to-head 8-7, but the latter won their lone encounter in Indian Wells, in the 2013 semifinals. The Tuesday match promises to be a nailbiter and will test how far they have come in their return to the sport.

Success here in the desert can give them a massive boost in points and each has lifted the trophy here before. Both recently returned to the tour and are still fighting to restore their places in the rankings, the German entering the tournament at world No.607 and the Dane at No.204. Now in the round of 16, the live ranking has them at No.342 and No.148, respectively. Both held the world number one spot at one point in their careers and are clawing their way closer with every week back on tour.

The German told Women’s Tennis Blog she expects both of them will savor the match more at this stage in their careers than previous encounters when they were younger. While the veterans have not played each other since 2018 in Eastbourne, they practice together frequently and stay in touch daily. The 36-year-old said, “I think we are both looking forward to this match and we are both in the same situation. We will try to play a good match, having a good battle out there. But, you know, we are friends now, and we will be still friends after a match. We will both try to win, but at the end, I think there are more important things than a tennis match.”

The three-time slam winner fought off Veronika Kudermetova 6-4 7-5. A critical game on the lefty’s serve in the second set went to deuce eight times before she finally held for 3-2. She saved seven of 11 breakpoints on her way to the victory.

Wozniacki expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming match against her childhood friend. Following a 6-2 4-6 6-0 victory over fellow wildcard entrant Katie Volynets, the one-time slam champion was bracing herself for another tough encounter: “it’s going to be a great match. We’ve played each other so much. We know each other extremely well. There’s going to be no secrets out there. We both know each other’s game inside out. We know what to do, we know what to expect. It’s really going to be about who is going to be better on the day.”

Since the two do chat every day, Women’s Tennis Blog asked if they might coordinate outfits for the matchup. Both Adidas players sported the same black and white Adidas dress this week. The mother of two said their only options for the tournament were a dress or shirt and skirt combination that appears almost identical on screen. Laughing, she added, “it’s a really cool dress, so I’m going to try and rock it. I know that Angie is going to rock it too.”

Three-set matches challenge top players in Indian Wells

The second round of the BNP Paribas Open proved to be challenging for several top seeds. Aryna Sabalenka triumphed over Peyton Stearns in a hard-fought battle, winning 6-7(2) 6-2 7-6(6). Coco Gauff staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Clara Burel, overcoming a slow start to win 2-6 6-3 7-6(4). Maria Sakkari also faced a tough challenge but emerged victorious against Diana Shnaider, with a final score of 5-7 6-4 6-0. In another thrilling match, Anna Blinkova secured a win over Jessica Pegula, prevailing 6-2 3-6 6-3.

The third-seeded Gauff, who is playing her last tournament as a teenager, struggled to maintain momentum and quickly lost any leads she picked up. The crowd firmly on the American’s side carried her through the more difficult moments. The nineteen-year-old was happy to deliver for them, telling media, “they definitely were trying to root me on, especially in the tough moments. I’m glad I was able to come out through at the end.”

The top American knows she has some work ahead of her: “the last tournaments I have done well usually I have a tough opening first round, especially with the biggest one was US Open. I don’t want to have any regrets on the court. Am I proud of how I played? Not really, to be honest. But the fight, I am proud of. I am eager to improve.”

Sakkari did not hold back to express disappointment in how she started the match, telling media, “think that first set and a half was one of the worst tennis I’ve played in a while. I was just nervous, and obviously having a new coach on your team you always want to impress them.” The ninth seed went on to add that new coach David Witt is a calm presence, but it was the pressure and nerves she put on herself that gave her troubles. The BNP Paribas Open is their first tournament together, so the two are still feeling out what works best, for example finding the best approach to on-court coaching and motivation.

The first night-session match saw second seed Sabalenka narrowly survive Peyton Stearns. The American lost four match points up 5-4 in the third set on her serve. The Belarusian won on her fourth match point in the tiebreak. Late in the match, the Australian Open champion slid and appeared to roll her ankle lightly. She managed to fall cleverly, rotating onto her knee but scraping it badly in the evasion. The 25-year-old finished the match without medical timeout but was looking forward to treatment. She told the press, “It was bad in first seconds, but then slowly it was getting better and I felt like, okay, I’m ready to play. In that moment when it twisted a little bit, I thought, oh, God, what went wrong? It’s happening to me. But this is just the proof that I was trying so hard to get to every ball and to put every ball back.”

The well-filled stadium cheered loudly for both players, but the high pressure favored the more experienced former world number one: “I was really pushing myself hard, even though I didn’t play my best tennis and she was crushing it like crazy. I was just trying to stay in the game and keep fighting for every point. This match definitely goes into the book of craziest matches and the best matches of my career.”

The third round will be played Sunday and Monday in Indian Wells.

Defending champion Rybakina withdraws from Indian Wells

Defending champion Elena Rybakina‘s hopes for a back-to-back triumph at the BNP Paribas Open were dashed when she was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to illness.

Elena Rybakina

Last year, as the No.10 seed, Rybakina secured her first WTA 1000 title by defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the Indian Wells final. She also overcame world No.1 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. On Friday, ahead of her opening match, Rybakina expressed deep regret over her withdrawal, emphasizing the importance of the tournament to her and her desire to defend her title:

It is with great sadness I must announce, I will not be able to participate at this year’s Indian Wells tournament due to gastrointestinal issues. Those close to me know how much this tournament means to me and how much I wanted to come back and defend my title.

The world No.4 had been leading the tour in wins for the year with 17 victories. Her impressive record included title runs in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi, as well as a runner-up finish in Doha to Iga Swiatek.

WTA mommas dominate on International Women’s Day

Following up Naomi Osaka’s first-round win over Sara Errani, fellow WTA mothers Angelique Kerber and her close friend Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the third round.

The German defeated tenth seed Jelena Ostapenko 5-7 6-3 6-3 in a sunny mid-day match over two hours long. Having played only a handful of matches since returning to the tour as a mother, the former Wimbledon champion was relaxed and relieved meeting with press after the match. She said, “it feels good to play a match like this and to win against such a top player. She won two titles this year already. That gives me a lot of confidence for the next matches.”

The transition back to the stadium has not been an easy one: “I’m showing myself that hard work pays off, that I just have to make the transition from the practice court to the match court. This is what I felt before this tournament, that I need a lot of matches, especially matches like this, playing against the top players, and that I have the feeling that I’m strong again in important moments.”

The current world No.607 told Women’s Tennis Blog that while Ostapenko’s aggressive style is a real challenge, she also hopes to have a few more grinding opponents with long rallies to test her match fitness.

Traveling with her daughter has affected the tennis mom’s schedule, as would be expected. “My practice is a little bit different than it was before. I really try to just practice once a day, but doing it more intense, just to going out playing intense, practicing intense, and exactly knowing what I want to practice.”

The 36-year-old initially bonded with the Danish Caroline Wozniacki over their shared Polish history, but now they bond over their experience as mothers on tour.

The 33-year-old mother of two Wozniacki defeated Donna Vekic 7-6(5) 6-3. Speaking with media after the match, the former world number one was pleased with her movement, but knew she still has some distance from her more consistent peak form: “what I have been struggling with in a couple matches this year is just the lack of match play, maybe losing focus a little bit all of a sudden throughout the match and then getting in trouble because of that.” She added, “I feel like every match I get to play, the better I can play.”

In the third round, Wozniacki will face Californian wildcard Katie Volynets, who defeated Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-4. Kerber will face seventeen-seed Veronika Kudermetova.

Sabine Lisicki is pregnant: “My fiancé and I are looking forward to this exciting journey.”

Former world No.12 Sabine Lisicki is joining the mom club in 2024. The German tennis player shared her exciting news on Instagram on International Women’s Day.

Sabine Lisicki

In a heartwarming announcement, Lisicki posted a carousel of photos. The first image features a pair of hands, hers and her partner’s, against the backdrop of an exotic beach with clear blue skies and sea. The caption intriguingly invites followers to “Swipe for a surprise.” The second photo reveals the big news with a beautifully decorated frame adorned with flowers and tiny white baby sandals, announcing, “Surprise, baby coming 2024.”

The 34-year-old Lisicki expressed her joy in the caption, saying, “Life is full of unexpected surprises. My fiancé and I are looking forward to this exciting journey. And…I guess I will have to make one more comeback.”

Despite facing debilitating injuries throughout her career, including a major anterior cruciate ligament tear in November 2020 at the Upper Austria Ladies Open, Lisicki remains determined to continue her tennis journey. Describing the severity of her most recent injury, she said, “I broke everything in my knee that can be broken.” Following surgery and extensive rehabilitation, Lisicki defied the odds and began her comeback in May 2022, participating in minor clay-court events.

Her resilience paid off when she won her first main draw match on the Hologic WTA Tour since 2018 as a wildcard at the Bad Homburg Open in June 2022. Continuing her comeback, the 2013 Wimbledon runner-up achieved a remarkable milestone by winning her first title in nine years at the Calgary Challenger, an ITF W60 tournament, in November 2023. Her last tournament was an ITF event in Dubai in December 2023.

Osaka opens up about her roles as tennis player and mother

Naomi Osaka defeated Sara Errani 6-3 6-1 in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and later shared with the media her experience of having her baby accompany her at the tournament.

Through the swirly winds reaching the court, Osaka had a balanced 9 aces and 9 double faults in the match against Errani. The Japanese player’s first serve percentage was only 52% to the Italian qualifier’s 82%. Despite the dire serve statistics, the 2018 champion kept calm and worked through the tricky conditions to take the victory.

Aside from winning her maiden title here, the 26-year-old claims Indian Wells as a sort of home tournament because as she said, “It’s nice to be able to get in the car and drive here” from Beverly Hills. This tournament is also the first where Osaka decided to travel with her baby daughter, Shai. Traveling as a mom is an adaptation in balancing work and life identities, “when she’s here, I’m an athlete and I’m a mom at the same time. There’s a constant surge of energy that I have to have.”

Speaking with press after the match, the four-time Slam winner was relaxed and took her time with media, but eager to get back home to her baby. “She is a very schedule-oriented baby, so I know exactly what she’s doing in all hours of the day.” Smiling, she checked her watch and added, “right now she’s about to eat.”

At this stage of coming back to form, the current world No.287 must claw her way through tough draws just to get the rust off and get more match experience again. “I needed this win today, especially it being so tricky with the wind and everything. I haven’t had that under my belt for a long time and I think it was an advantage for me to play a first-round match.”

This early in the comeback, Osaka is not putting too much pressure on herself, “I’m just really excited to keep going through the tournament.” The next opponent will be Liudmila Samsonova in round 2 on Saturday.

Pavlyuchenkova films a day in her life with boyfriend, Indian Wells edition

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and her fashion-forward boyfriend are currently in Indian Wells, where the tennis star plays the BNP Paribas Open tournament. The couple decided to give fans a glimpse into their private life by creating an entertaining video for social media.

They begin the vlog with a car ride to a supermarket to pick up ingredients for dinner. Amidst the shopping, Pavlyuchenkova affectionately embraces her partner. And what’s Pavlyuchenkova’s favorite food? Meat!

Upon returning to their Indian Wells accommodation, Pavlyuchenkova receives a treatment from her physio on the floor, laughingly saying: “There’s nothing normal in my team.” Following this, she enjoys a relaxing tea time. Then she takes on the task of ironing her boyfriend’s shirt, jokingly commenting, “My duties off the court.” To cap off their day, the couple joins forces to prepare dinner, ending the day on a cozy note.

The highlight of the vlog is Pavlyuchenkova’s reveal of a special gift—a Tiffany and Co. whistle engraved with the initials “MK,” which she explains is for her boyfriend, Mathias. This marks the first time she has publicly shared her boyfriend’s name.

The world No.24 Pavlyuchenkova has a bye in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open. Her opening match is scheduled for Friday.

Indian Wells update: WTA stars talk to media as rain rolls into desert and disrupts play

As the first round of the WTA action got off to a rocky start with rain delays Wednesday in Indian Wells, top seeds enjoyed a fully packed media day and some abbreviated practices.

World number one, the Polish Iga Swiatek was enjoying a slow start. The 2022 BNP Paribas Open champion took two days off and described herself as “fresh and ready to compete.” Before coming to Indian Wells, she had a mini vacation in Malibu to go shopping and check out the beach. The top seed spent another day relaxing by the pool before getting back onto the court.

The 22-year-old pointed out a key way that this California tournament is different from other 1000-level events on the calendar: “Here you have all these sponsors, shoes, all these obligations we have to fulfill.” Famous for its scenic backdrops and a plethora of country clubs with rentable tennis courts, sponsors choose the preceding week to film commercials and shoot photos that will be used for the rest of the season. This creates a significant distraction that sought-after players do not otherwise have outside of majors.

Coco Gauff had a very different kind of photoshoot at her home in Florida recently. The 19-year-old American will grace the cover of Vogue in April. In her humble nature, the third seed immediately linked the commercial benefits to the sport, not just herself. Gauff said, “I think it’s really important to bring more fans to the sport.” The young player added, “It’s one thing I was actually talking about the other day with Serena, just how much of a presence she had off-court that matched her presence on the court. I think that brought more fans into tennis and paved the pathway for people like me to be on the cover.”

Making the Vogue photoshoot stand out more, the spread includes a family portrait. Coco’s two younger brothers proudly stand next to her in their football and baseball uniforms. In the words of the eldest daughter and only tennis player in the bunch: “That’s just what we are, we’re a sports family so it’s really special.”

Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, was in a characteristically good mood speaking with press, still riding the high of her second Australian Open title. Reflecting on the major achievement, the Belarusian said, “I don’t like to focus on goals that I was able to achieve, I like to move on and start getting ready for the next one.” The next goal is capturing the BNP Paribas Open title that narrowly slid through her fingers in 2023, when Elena Rybakina defeated her 7-6 6-4 in the final.

Sabalenka was enjoying a late afternoon practice when the weather took an abrupt turn. Gusty winds kicked up dust and sand. Maria Sakkari, practicing with new coach David Witt, repeatedly gestured to her eyes as though to suggest problems with all the debris being kicked up. When rain started shortly after, Sakkari, Swiatek, and Sabalenka, all ended their practices prematurely to get inside the stadium again. The night session, starting with Venus Williams facing qualifier Nao Hibino, was delayed over two hours, and only started up again in fits and spurts. Three hours after the scheduled start, only two games had been played over two short intervals of play. At 9 p.m., the tournament announced play would resume Thursday.

The full first round will be played out Thursday. The second round, featuring the seeded players, kicks off Friday at 11 a.m. Los Angeles time.
