Second-ranked Kim Clijsters‘ failed to receive much attention with Serena and Venus Williams returning to the competition this week, but here it is, the Belgian surprisingly lost in the second round of her home tournament, the Unicef Open. Her conqueror – Italian world No.81 Romina Oprandi, who is now celebrating her greatest career achievement. Final score: 7-6(5) 6-3.
Not only has Clijsters lost, but in the first set she appeared to have injured right ankle. The former world No.1 will undergo some tests to see how her ankle is doing, and now even her participation at Wimbledon is in doubt. Remember, only weeks ago Clijsters was healing her right ankle injury sustained at a wedding?
At the French Open, her first tournament after the recovery from the injury, Clijsters was also upset in the second round, by Arantxa Rus, ranked outside Top 100. (photo: krissaconnection)
Kim is slowly but surely begining to annoy me with these things -_-, I think it’s about time she starts being serious about tennis and focus already! I get it, she has family and did have an injury to heal, but she really shouldn’t allow herself upsets like this. She is a great player and she can do a lot better than this. Her results after AO are just disappointing. 🙁
Definitely seems like bad news for Kim. One of the reasons Woz played so often this year was to bank a comfy cushion of ranking points over her closest rivals and hope they don’t play well enough to overtake her before the year is over.
Granted Caro has a lot of points to defend on the back half of the season but looks like Kim is one less rival to worry about … for now.
What a shame! I am really sorry for Kim. Hope so much for her participation in Wimbledon.
Mirjana, I’ve got the same opinion like Marine. Kim is serious about tennis. She just has to find her good old form again.
Go Kim!!!
Mirjana, I don’t think Kim’s not serious about tennis. Her ankle has obviously not healed yet. She has had quite a bad luck with injuries this year. Hopefully she’ll be healthy and ready for Wimbledon.
I suppose you’re right, but i’ve seen her too many times this year playing with her head god-knows-where. She’s skipping Wimbledon now, I hope she’ll recover and get in top form for the us open. 🙁
