The pandemic significantly reduced the number of new tennis collections launched in the 2020 season, but Fila stood out as one of the busiest brands in this hard year that will soon be behind us. As part of my annual Fashion Retrospections, let’s do a recap of Fila’s 2020 outfits on the example of Sofia Kenin, currently their most prominent representative.
World number four Sofia Kenin started the year at the Brisbane International, wearing the Heritage collection introduced at tournaments that closed the 2019 season. The American picked the navy Fila Fall Heritage Dress characteristic for its traditional pinstripes — chevron above the waistline and vertical at the skirt. Both the back and the neckline are V-shaped. A contrast red belt inset defines the waist.
At the Adelaide International, Kenin sported a white version of the Heritage Dress.
Kenin was dressed in Fila’s Colorful Play collection when she won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and her second title of the season at the inaugural Open 6ème Sens – Métropole de Lyon. Her outfit of choice was the green Fila Play Halter Tank, featuring mesh insert at neck, tucked in the flutter-hem Fila Play Flare Skirt colored amparo blue.
The pastel Axilus 2 Energized shoes were perfectly coordinated with Kenin’s Melbourne look.
In Dubai and Doha, we saw Kenin in a white halter-neck dress from the Colorful Play collection.
For Indian Wells and Miami, Fila prepared the 30 Love collection, but it never saw the light of the day at WTA tournaments because of the long coronavirus hiatus. This was an ultra feminine collection as Fila experimented with berry tones and finishes such as rose embellishments and ties.
At the Western & Southern Open in August, the 22-year-old introduced the colorful Top Spin collection, in particular the Top Spin Dress and Axilus 2 Energized Tie Dye shoes.
The Heritage line was back at the US Open. The traditional red, navy and white palette was complemented by pops of eye-catching green in the latest iteration of Fila’s classic range. Sonya’s ensemble included the navy version of the Fall Heritage Racerback Tank, the green Fall Heritage Skirt and the matching Axilus 2 Energized shoe.
In Rome, Kenin sported the Fall Heritage Dress.
Kenin finalized the season with a runner-up finish at the French Open where she debuted the Mad for Plaid collection, characterized by plaid prints in tones of mouth-watering melon, tropical coral and crisp white. Her outfit of choice included the Mad for Plaid Print Racer Tank and white Mad for Plaid Flare Skirt.
As always, Fila updated the Axilus 2 Energized shoe to match the rest of the collection, this time in orange tones.
I swear either she has a corset on, or her outfits are just one size to small for her body!
Ian, haha funny comment. Many people say that she wears a smaller size. Personally, I really like how she looks in Fila, even in those smaller fits.
