WTA frustrates with tight scheduling: Players compete sleep-deprived, stressed, and rushed

Professional tennis players are expected to perform at top level at all times, but there are a lot of external factors that hamper their ability to show their best, a major one being tight scheduling. As many as three players who reached the semifinals of Abu Dhabi last week have lost in the first round of this week’s Qatar TotalEnergies Open, in straight sets. Moreover, Cluj-Napoca champion Karolina Pliskova slept for just four hours ahead of her Doha opener.

    Daria Kasatkina
Despite being tired, Daria Kasatina put a smile on her face for photographer Jimmie48 in Doha.

Less than 24 hours after losing the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open final to Elena Rybakina 6-1 6-4, Daria Kasatkina played her first-round match at the Qatar Open and lost it in straight sets to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-2 7-6(2).

After reaching Sunday’s Abu Dhabi final, Kasatkina criticized the WTA scheduling that made her play her first-round match in Doha on Monday:

I have a question, I don’t know to who, to WTA or the tournaments, like, are you guys trying to make players die, or to get injured often? I might have to fly Monday and step on the court the same day, after playing five matches here at the highest level. So I’m sorry but that’s something we have to talk about and consider.

Similarly, Beatriz Haddad Maia, who had previously lost to Kasatkina in the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open semifinals 6-3 4-6 7-6(2), also made a first-round exit in Doha, falling to Wang Xinyu 6-1 6-3.

Liudmila Samsonova, another player that reached the Abu Dhabi semifinals, where she lost to eventual champion Elena Rybakina 6-0 4-6 6-2, was scheduled to play her Doha opener on Monday and lost to Leylah Fernandez 7-5 7-6(4).

Karolina Pliskova at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open
Karolina Pliskova at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open

It was not only about players competing at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open. Karolina Pliskova won her 17th career title at the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca on Sunday, while her Doha opener was already on Monday. Despite rushing from Romania to Qatar, the former world No.1 made it through to the second round, defeating Anna Kalinskaya after losing the first set, 2-6 7-6(3) 6-4.

Pliskova’s husband Michal Hrdlicka gave us an insight into her challenging intercontinental travel:

She caught the flight from Cluj via Istanbul to Doha at the last minute. If the final in Romania had been played just a little longer, she would not have reached Qatar at all.

He proceeded to explain that Karolina arrived at the hotel at 8 in the morning, slept for just four hours, had a warm-up and then played her match.

  • Beatriz Haddad Maia switches from Joma to Asics in 2024

Beatriz Haddad Maia switches from Joma to Asics in 2024

The first big tennis apparel sponsorship change in the new year is Beatriz Haddad Maia‘s replacement of Joma with Asics. The world No.11 signed a head-to-toe multi-year deal with the company founded more than 70 years ago by Kihachiro Onitsuka.

    Beatriz Haddad Maia in Asics
First photo of Beatriz Haddad Maia in Asics apparel. Photo courtesy of Asics.

The Brazilian WTA player shared her excitement about switching to Asics tennis clothes and shoes:

“I am thrilled to join Asics, a brand that has a long-standing positive reputation of taking care of their athletes on and off the court. I am a baseline player so as soon as I tested Gel-Resolution 9, I knew it was the right tennis shoe for me with support, stability, and comfort. Asics is known for advanced tennis shoes and apparel of course, but they are just as dedicated to supporting their athletes off the court. Beginning 2024 gives me more confidence to fully focus on my game, in what will be an exciting year.”

Beatriz Haddad Maia was still wearing Joma at the 2024 United Cup. Her tennis racquet is Wilson Blade.

At this month’s United Cup, Haddad Maia was clad in Joma, but she started wearing Asics at this week’s Adelaide International, where she lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round. The Brazilian promoted the Asics Fall Match Tank and Asics Fall Match Skirt, from last year’s collection, although new outfits for the 2024 Australian Open have been launched.

A model showcases the Asics Fall Match Tank and Skort, Beatriz Haddad Maia’s first Asics outfit of choice.

The addition of a highly successful WTA player significantly bolsters the lineup of athletes in the Asics roster. With the departure of the world No.1 Iga Swiatek to join the On family last year, it marked a significant loss for Asics. However, they managed to offset this setback, at least to an extent, by securing the signing of Belinda Bencic.

Winning her third Roland Garros, Iga Swiatek is extending her stay atop the WTA rankings for the 63rd consecutive week. She is 928 points ahead of second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, who had a chance to dethrone her from the No.1 spot, but lost in the French Open semifinals while she had to go one match further than the Pole in Paris.

Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan took over the No.3 position from American Jessica Pegula, who will remember the 2023 French Open for food poisoning that made her first few days in Paris a nightmare. Still, Pegula remains in the Top 5.

Following her semifinal run at Roland Garros, Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil has broken into the Top 10.

Karolina Muchova climbs 27 spots to a career-high No.16 following her first appearance in a Grand Slam final.
