Venus Williams gives sneak peek into her Wimbledon 2013 dress

Venus Williams shared with us her new EleVen design – a white dress for Wimbledon 2013. Personally, I find it the best EleVen and Wimbledon 2013 design so far. The shape of the skirt is perfect, it follows the body shape but is not too sporty, straight or tight, while the top is beautifully highlighted by the back with mesh inserts and stylish piping which adds visual interest to the dress and makes it memorable.

You can buy the dress at Tennis Warehouse, price: $88. It’s officially called EleVen Women’s Perfect Mesh Dress.

After finishing runner-up at the 2013 French Open, Maria Sharapova is sitting out the Wimbledon lead-up period, but this time in the stands, supporting her boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov at the AEGON Championships. The Russian took a train to London and cheered for her new partner during his first-round victory over Dudi Sela on Monday, the first day of the tournament at Queens Club.

On the fashion front, Sharapova is not taking a break. Today she released new photos of her Nike Women’s London Premier Maria Flounce Dress.

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard accompanied Sharapova in the photoshoot.

Additional news: Where there is Sharapova, there is money. Alongside Serena Williams and Li Na, Sharapova made the Forbes magazine’s Top 100 World’s Highest Paid Athletes list for 2013 and the WTA players are the only three women on the list. Sharapova is the leader, occupying spot No.22 as the top-earning female athlete for the ninth straight year, with $29 million.

Close look at Nike Wimbledon dresses for Sharapova and Williams

Tennis fashion is flourishing at Roland Garros this fortnight, but Nike is already well-prepared for Wimbledon, the queen of Grand Slams. Actually, back in March when we got a glimpse at the Roland Garros dresses for Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams, we also saw the previews of their Nike dresses for Wimbledon, but now we can have a closer look.

Fila clothes for Kim Clijsters’ farewell year

This year’s retrospections of WTA players’ outfits we opened with fashion queen Maria Sharapova and her Nike designs, but right after her I think it’s most fair to feature the great tennis champion Kim Clijsters who hung up her racket after the 2012 US Open, causing her clothing sponsor Fila to lose its most recognizable endorser.

Fila signed Clijsters eleven year ago and in 2005 the company decided to sponsor the Belgian for the duration of her career. The Italian sportswear brand was aware that they would lose their brightest star, so early this year they concluded new contracts, with Vera Zvonareva and Jelena Jankovic. Of course, Svetlana Kuznetsova is still with them, she’s also their long-time endorser.

Let’s move on to the overview of Fila 2012 style. As you can see, their signature clean lines, sporty designs and colors of red, blue/black and white were predominant. Just a note, at the Australian Open, besides the black skirt and white V-neck shirt, Clijsters wore an all-black outfit with lime details.

This year Clijsters didn’t play Roland Garros because of a right hip injury, but remember how last year Fila celebrated its 100th anniversary at the claycourt Grand Slam with a special outfit sketched up according to the outfit Clijsters received for Christmas as a child. At Wimbledon, Fila introduced touches of gold on a cap sleeve top and traditionally white skort from their Trophy collection.

At the London Olympics Clijsters wore Adidas, like the rest of the Belgian team.

The Fila outfit of the year is of course the US Open celebration of Kim’s last tournament and the end of her career. For the occasion, Fila designed a collection with a symbolic pattern – 11 big stars honor Kim’s 11 years with Fila, while four stars have a tennis ball, paying tribute to the champion’s four Grand Slam titles. There are two versions of the ensemble, white for the day, navy for the night. Here you can have a closer look at all the items.

The official ceremony closing Clijsters’ illustrious tennis career will be held on December 12th, in Antwerp, Belgium. Clijsters will play an exhibition match with Venus Williams, there will be one-hour-long Kim’s Thank You farewell show and the evening will be concluded by a doubles match.
What do you think of Clijsters’ 2012 style? I think her and Fila are a match made in heaven! (photos: © Neal Trousdale, digiarnie, Richard van Ioon, Wacka Quacker, Moo’s Tennis Blog, Christian Mesiano)

Wimbledon 2012 WTA awards: Grass Empress, Finesse Queen, Gutsy Performer, Brave Heart, Biggest Disappointment

Omair is known for his statistical contributions to Women’s Tennis Blog, but as of Roland Garros he started doing post-Grand Slam awards, giving WTA players awards they deserved on the account of their performance. You will see how the tables are turning all the time – within just a month Serena improved from the Biggest Disappointment to Grass Empress, while Maria Sharapova downgraded from the Clay Queen to the Biggest Disappointment.

Serena Williams – GRASS EMPRESS

Serena Williams was coming off a first-round defeat at Roland Garros, her first ever first-round exit at Grand Slam, but she rebounded beautifully, reminding us that she still is the player to beat on grass. The American defeated three of the Top 4 players on her way to the Wimbledon 2012 title – Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinals (world No.4 and defending champion), Victoria Azarenka in the semis (world No.2 and reigning Australian Open champion) and Agnieszka Radwanska in the final (world No.3). To top that off, Serena went on to win the doubles title as well, with sister Venus Williams.

Agnieszka Radwanska – FINESSE QUEEN

In today’s game of power and big hitters, in making the Wimbledon final Radwanska showed us with her crafty play and her court sense that there still is room for finesse players. She did what neither Petra Kvitova, nor Victoria Azarenka managed to do, i.e. take a set off Serena Williams. Before Wimbledon, Radwanska was the only member of the Top 15 never to have made a Grand Slam semifinal, but she went one step better at Wimbledon making the final and falling in three sets to one of the best grass-court players ever.

Agnieszka forces a three-setter, but Serena wins Wimbledon final

The 2012 Wimbledon final was predicted to be one-sided, but the collected Grand Slam final debutante Agnieszka Radwanska didn’t melt away and even came back from 6-1 4-2 down to win the second set. However, her fightback was bound to be short-lived given Serena Williams‘ superb level at this Wimbledon and the American got hold of her fifth Venus Rosewater Dish and her 14th Grand Slam trophy in singles.

Radwanska quickly lost the first set and found herself trailing 4-2 in the second, but then she converted the first break point she earned to level at 4-4, and then in the twelfth game of the second set she converted the second one to spice up the final with the third set. But even though Radwanska’s conversion of break points was a perfect 100%, she earned just those two chances, while Serena earned 15 and converted five, including two in the 37-minute third set to record a 6-1 5-7 6-2 victory.

The big difference between Agnieszka and Serena was also in the department of winners – Agnieszka hit 13 to Serena’s 58, and 14 unforced errors to Serena’s 36.

Serena’s Wimbledon 2012 run will definitely be remembered by her serve. She finished the tournament with a total of 102 aces, while only in the semifinal against Victoria Azarenka she scored 24 without making double faults. In today’s championship match, Acerena won the fourth game of the third set with four straight aces!

Agnieszka produced a good final, especially given her respiratory problems and runny nose, but Serena’s serve is unbeatable right now. In the post-match on-court interviews, Agnieszka said how these were the best two weeks of her life, while Serena made reference to the time she was hospitalized and how it’s a miracle that she’s back winning the biggest tennis title.

These are the players Serena defeated this fortnight: Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, Melinda Czink, Zheng Jie, Yaroslava Shvedova, defending champion Petra Kvitova, Victoria Azarenka and finally the 2005 junior Wimbledon champion Agnieszka Radwanska.

Serena will shortly get back to Centre Court and with sister Venus try to win the women’s singles doubles title against Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.

Radwanska cancels Friday conference ahead of Wimbledon final due to respiratory illness

Agnieszka Radwanska is far from a favorite in the Wimbledon final against Serena Williams and the respiratory illness that has caused her to cancel her Friday news conference is making her an even less likely Wimbledon 2012 champion.

Radwanska is not able to talk easily. Even in her semifinal win Radwanska was troubled by the ailment and her post-match conference was cut short due to her coughing. Moreover, Radwanska withdrew from women’s doubles on Wednesday also because of the illness.

It is still unclear what all this means for the final, but it is far from a positive development. (source: ESPN, photo: © Neal Trousdale)

Preview of Wimbledon 2012 women’s singles final: Serena Williams vs. Agnieszka Radwanska

Serena Williams aced her way into her seventh Wimbledon final and will face Agnieszka Radwanska, a debutante at that stage of a Grand Slam. Will the abundance of Serena’s experience and her intimidating serve prevail or will Agnieszka’s craftiness produce the first Polish Grand Slam champion. Our guest poster Omair will look at the numbers behind their Wimbledon 2012 performance and make a statistical prediction. Enjoy!

Serena Williams will walk onto Centre Court knowing that she is into her seventh Wimbledon final and has gone 4-2 in the prior six, with the losses coming at the hands of Maria Sharapova (2004) and Venus Williams (2008), in fact only three players have been able to beat Serena in her prior 17 major final appearances (Venus – twice, Sharapova, and Samantha Stosur). Serena will no doubt be the favorite and will be highly motivated to win her fifth Venus Rosewater Dish and her first Grand Slam title in two years (her last coming here at Wimbledon in 2010).

Radwanska walks onto Centre Court knowing that she has a shot at the top spot and that she can become the first ever Polish player to win a Grand Slam and join the elite club of 13 players who have won a major at both junior and senior levels.

The pair has met twice, both meetings coming in 2008. Surprisingly, Serena was ranked sixth then as well and both went in favor of Serena in straight sets, one of those wins was in the quarters of Wimbledon.

Let us have a look at the performance of the players so far at Wimbledon 2012.

* I have used the average aces, double faults, winners and unforced errors hit by the player per match.

The stats are clearly in favor of the sixth-seeded American, the four-time Wimbledon champion. Serena has won a whopping 80% of her first serves, while Radwanska has been able to win just 68%. Serena has also won 10% more points on her second serve, compared to her title match opponent. Serena lost just one point on her first serve in the first set of her semifinal match against Victoria Azarenka, one of the best returners on the Tour, and lost a total of four points on serve in that set.
