Stephens, Anisimova rally for wins, their Team Kindness trails 14-10 in Charleston

Friday at the Credit One Bank Invitational started with Team Peace leading Team Kindness 8-6 and after five matches on Day 4, each worth two points, Bethanie Mattek-Sands’ team continued the dominance, 14-10.

In the first match of the day, carried over from Thursday, Team Peace’s Ajla Tomljanovic defeated Monica Puig 7-5 6-2.

Afterwards, Amanda Anisimova improved the prospects of Team Kindness, overcoming bad patches against Caroline Dolehide, saving a match point at 7-5 5-3 and winning 25 of the last 28 points en route to a 5-7 7-5 [10-2] victory.

In the only doubles match on Friday, Emma Navarro and Jennifer Brady earned two more points for Team Peace by defeating Shelby Rogers, a Charleston native, and Alison Riske, a new resident of the South Carolina city, 6-2 6-3.

In the following match, Danielle Collins of Team Peace dominated Victoria Azarenka in the first set, as the former world No.1 lost 21 of 24 points while returning at one point. The second set was more competitive, but the American prevailed 6-1 7-5.

Team Kindness was trailing their opponents 14-8 as Sloane Stephens took the court against Eugenie Bouchard in the last match of the night. Bouchard let a 5-2 slip in the second set and failed to force a match tiebreaker by wasting three set points. Stephens broke Bouchard’s serve in a 12-minute game and then prevailed in a standard tiebreaker for a 6-3 7-6(7) victory.

Saturday’s Credit One Bank Invitational schedule will feature four matches, each worth three points. To repeat once more, at the moment, Team Peace leads Team Kindness 14-10. The first team to reach 25 points will win the tournament. Sunday will be doubles-only.

Tomljanovic, Anisimova, Mattek-Sands complete wins on a rainy day in Charleston

If it is not COVID-19 wreaking havoc on this tennis season, then it is definitely rain. After last month’s UTR PRO Match Series tournament in West Palm Beach got canceled on the final day because of thunderstorms, the other tennis event with professional players organized on the US soil, this week’s Credit One Bank Invitational in Charleston, has been heavily affected by rain the first two days.

Two of the four scheduled singles matches were postponed on Tuesday, as Day 1 finished with a 1-1 tie between Team Kindness and Team Peace. On Wednesday, Ajla Tomljanovic, Amanda Anisimova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands each posted one-point singles wins before rain washed out play, so now Team Peace leads Team Kindness 3-2.

In a non-televised match, Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic cruised past Charleston native Shelby Rogers 6-1 6-2, recording a victory for Team Peace.

Amanda Anisimova trailed Danielle Collins 4-1 when their encounter was suspended on Tuesday night, but the 2019 French Open semifinalist ended the two-day battle in her favor, tying Team Peace and her Team Kindness 2-2 with a 7-5 6-4 win over her fellow American.

Afterwards, Team Peace captain Bethanie Mattek-Sands recorded a 6-1 6-3 victory over Monica Puig, who was playing not only her first match since the coronavirus pandemic disturbed the planet but also her first match in 2020. The rusty 2016 Olympic gold medalist was no challenge for her veteran opponent this time, handing plenty of errors and mistimed shots. Just as the clash finished, a downpour started.

Thursday’s matches will be worth two points each, but not those carried over from Wednesday’s schedule (i.e. the first three listed above are worth one point each). Here you can read more about the Credit One Bank International groups and progressively increasing scoring system.

Kenin, Fernandez victorious on Day 1 of Credit One Bank Invitational in Charleston

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic caused the Volvo Car Open to be canceled, Charleston is now hosting the Credit One Bank Invitational, continuing the city’s longstanding tennis tradition with an all-star cast of 16 women.

The players are divided into two teams: Team Kindness led by 2017 US Open finalist Madison Keys and Team Peace led by nine-time Grand Slam doubles and mixed-doubles title holder Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Besides captain Madison Keys, Team Kindness includes Amanda Anisimova, 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens, Leylah Fernandez, 2012-2013 Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka, 2016 Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig, Alison Riske and Shelby Rogers.

Team Peace includes reigning Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, 2014 Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard, Emma Navarro, Caroline Dolehide, Ajla Tomljanovic, Danielle Collins, and Jennifer Brady.

Day 1 of the unique team exhibition event held at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island was affected by inclement weather, so only two of four scheduled singles matches completed. Sofia Kenin cruised past Alison Riske 6-1 6-1 to earn a point for Team Peace and Leylah Fernandez won a battle of the youngsters against Emma Navarro 6-4 6-0 to score a point for Team Kindness.

While Novak Djokovic’s recent Adria Tour event spread the coronavirus in the tennis world, as social-distancing measures were completely neglected, ladies at the Credit One Bank Invitational are disciplined and cautious, as even their selfies confirm. No fans or media have been permitted on site, while players are calling their own lines with the assistance of a solo chair umpire.

The tournament will run through Sunday and the ladies will play 16 singles matches and eight doubles matches, with each victory offering points to the winning side.

The Credit One Bank Invitational will resume on Wednesday with Ajla Tomljanovic vs. Shelby Rogers in a non-televised match at 2:00 p.m. EST. The Danielle Collins vs. Amanda Anisimova match will resume on Tennis Channel at 4:00 p.m. EST.

Tennis slowly returns: Riske, Anisimova, Collins, Tomljanovic to play the UTR Pro Match Series in May

After almost two months without live tennis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sport is making baby steps in getting things back to normal. Universal Tennis today announced the UTR Pro Match Series presented by Tennis Channel featuring high-profile ATP and WTA players in the first top-tier professional tennis events televised internationally since the global health crisis put a halt to tennis in March.

The first event of the series will be held from May 8th to May 10th, featuring four ATP players — Matteo Berrettini, Reilly Opelka, Tennys Sandgren, and Tommy Paul — in a round-robin event beginning at 12:00 ET each day.

Three American WTA players — Alison Riske, Amanda Anisimova and Danielle Collins — will be joined by Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in a four-player ladies’ event from May 22nd to May 24th.

The venue will be a private court in the West Palm Beach, FL, area. To ensure maximum safety, there will be no spectators, no handshaking, no ballkids and no line judges, only the chair umpire will oversee the match, while each player will have their own set of marked balls. Before and after play, the court and facility will be professionally disinfected.

UTR Pro Match Series events are prize money competitions, not exhibitions. All matches will be broadcast live on Tennis Channel and count toward a player’s UTR rating.

Doha PHOTOS: Svitolina, Vekic, Riske eliminated on Monday

Our photographer Jimmie48 started the busy day in Doha by accompanying Svetlana Kuznetsova to the Qatar National Library. The Russian’s favorite place in the sunlit building were bubble chairs.

Jimmie48 attended the practice session of Ashleigh Barty and then proceeded to the actual matches, covering most of the first-round action and the second-round victory of Amanda Anisimova over struggling fifth seed Elina Svitolina.

Elena Rybakina continues her spectacular form this season, eliminating Sorana Cirstea in the opening round, Dayana Yastremska beat qualifier Kirsten Flipkens, American Jennifer Brady won two tiebreaks to dispatch compatriot Alison Riske in three sets, Barbora Strycova defeated tenth seed Petra Martic, Iga Swiatek upset seed No.17 Donna Vekic, seed No.12 Marketa Vondrousova fell to Zheng Saisai, 15th seed Maria Sakkari advanced past Julia Goerges, and Anett Kontaveit beat Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets.

We have photos from all these matches in the gallery below:

Dubai PHOTOS: Clijsters returns as first round begins

First-round action kicked off on Monday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and the highlight of the day was Kim Clijsters‘ third return to competitive tennis, which was ended at first hurdle by in-form Garbine Muguruza.

Our Jimmie48 started photographing early in the morning, attending practice sessions of Marketa Vondrousova, Maria Sakkari, Sofia Kenin, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Julia Goerges, Simona Halep, Dayana Yastremska, as well as Kim Clijsters’ final preparation before the big comeback.

My favorite action shots are those of Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, who beat America’s Alison Riske 7-6(3) 1-6 6-3 to advance to the second round. Also awesome are Barbora Strycova‘s celebration moments, as the Czech overcame American Amanda Anisimova 7-6(3) 2-6 6-4. Elise Mertens lost just three games against Wang Qiang in the first round and Marketa Vondrousova cruised past Anastasija Sevastova without dropping serve.

In addition, we have a few photos of the Simona Halep/Julia Goerges doubles pairing, who lost to Makoto Ninomiya and Yang Zhaoxuan.

Monday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships also featured a ceremony with WTA CEO Steve Simon commemorating 20 years of tournament.

Wuhan Open PHOTOS: Barty, Pliskova, Svitolina, Halep move into the third round

Tuesday’s schedule at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open was super busy with 14 second-round matches in singles.

Our photographer Jimmie48 not only attended most of these singles matches, he also shot some doubles action, Donna Vekic‘s practice, and accompanied WTA Future Stars as they met Raluca Olaru, practiced with Vania King, and attended Elina Svitolina‘s press conference.

When it comes to the matches that shaped up the tournament’s third round, top-ranked Ashleigh Barty rallied to beat Caroline Garcia, second seed and fresh Zhengzhou Open champion Karolina Pliskova beat rising American teenager Amanda Anisimova in straight sets, third seed Elina Svitolina came back from an early break down to dispatch unseeded two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza, and fourth seed Simona Halep kept intact her perfect head-to-head record against the always-tricky Barbora Strycova.

Seeds mostly had a successful day in Wuhan, as the only seeded player who lost on Tuesday was No.7 Belinda Bencic, falling at the hands of Russian qualifier Veronika Kudermetova 2-6 6-3 6-4.

San Jose PHOTOS: Vekic, Anisimova, Zheng, Ahn complete quarterfinal field

The second half of second-round matches at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic took place on Thursday, as the quarterfinal field was wrapped up by Donna Vekic, Amanda Anisimova, Zheng Saisai and Kristie Ahn.

Croatian fifth seed Donna Vekic recovered from a deficit in both sets to see off former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka 6-4 6-3, who won this tournament in 2010, at the time it was based in Stanford. Vekic’s next opponent will be the only unseeded player to reach the quarterfinals — American qualifier Kristie Ahn, who upset Belgian third seed Elise Mertens 6-3 6-3.

Fourth seed Amanda Anisimova needed just 54 minutes to dispatch fellow American Madison Brengle 6-2 6-2 and will next face Chinese Zheng Saisai, who eliminated American eighth seed Danielle Collins 6-2 6-0.

Moreover, Kristie Ahn sat down with a group of high school kids to share some tennis wisdom and career planning advice, while Elina Svitolina practiced her driving skills in the Porsche booth on her day off.

All this and more from Thursday in San Jose you can see in Jimmie48‘s photo gallery.
