While our photographer Jimmie48 is busy bringing us excellent live photos from the Brisbane International (even Maria Sharapova and the WTA are using his pics! ;)), all tennis clothing brands are focused on the fast-approaching Australian Open, where they traditionally launch new collections. Yesterday I received an email from a Fila representative and got exclusive information about their new Platinum collection, set to be first displayed at Melbourne by, most notably, Jelena Jankovic and Julia Goerges.

The 16th-ranked Jankovic will wear the Fila Platinum dress, in diva pink/white/charcoal hues, featuring a racerback silhouette with a no-sew insert at the front yoke, reflective piping at the center back and an inside bra with removable padded cups.

While we’re waiting for the Fila Platinum collection to hit the stores, let me remind you that this week in Brisbane JJ wore this lovely last year’s light green Fila Fall Collezione Dress, that is also available in black and white.

Most brands are yet to reveal their Australian Open 2015 designs. Besides Fila, we’ve seen only the new Adidas by Stella McCartney clothes and they have already been at retail for quite some time.

Sharapova takes Brisbane by storm

Tuesday at the 2015 Brisbane International was all about Maria Sharapova as the top seed entered Pat Rafter Arena for the very first time to complete her first match of the brand new season.

Following early exits of several star players, including last year’s finalist Victoria Azarenka, the pressure was on the Russian to avoid a similar fate and Sharapova delivered in an impressive fashion.

Facing Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova, who already had four matches in Brisbane under her belt after completing the qualifying rounds, Sharapova started her 2015 season in a frantic fashion, needing a mere 63 minutes to get past Shvedova 6-0 6-1.

Sharapova will be joined in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Brisbane International by Angelique Kerber, following the German’s 6-3 7-5 win over Daria Gavrilova, as well as by Varvara Lepchenko & Elina Svitolina.

While Lepchenko decided the all-American clash with Madison Keys in her favour, the young Ukranian successfully defeated the the soon-to-be Aussi Ajla Tomljanovic. Following Sam Stosur’s early exit, the losses of Gavrilova & Tomljanovic have eliminated the last of the local favorites from the main draw.

Tuesday also saw the successful reunification of a very popular doubles team, as Sabine Lisicki & WTA legend Martina Hingis successfully completed their first doubles match in months. The popular German had stopped playing doubles with the five-time Grand Slam champion ever since dropping Hingis as her coach last summer. The Swiss tennis legend had been successfully teaming up with Flavia Pennetta since then, but the Italian is now busy with her Hopman Cup duty in Perth, and Hingis and Lisicki seem to be very happy to team up again, not only winning their match but also visibly enjoying each other’s company on court.

Wednesday at the 2015 Brisbane International will complete the second round of the tournament, as #2 seed Ana Ivanovic is scheduled to play her first match in Australia. The Serbian Grand Slam winner is the last of the players in Brisbane to start her 2015 season.

Thunderstorms & upsets rock Brisbane on Monday

After three days of uninterrupted sunshine at the 2015 Brisbane International, the Australian weather showed its rough side on Monday, as severe showers soaked the tournament site all day until the late afternoon.

The Queensland Tennis Centre is well equipped for rainy conditions and besides a completely shielded center court, the two outside show-courts possess a roof as well. In theory, this should allow for play to continue through all conditions, but Monday’s weather proved to be too much too handle for the venue at times.

The torrential showers were so heavy at times that play on the two outside courts needed to stop several times as the court ends kept getting soaked in rain. Even play inside Pat Rafter Arena had to be briefly interrupted, because the wind was carrying the water through the gaps in the roof structure.

One of the matches affected was the first-round clash between Madison Keys & Dominika Cibulkova and the American seemed to handle the slight distraction much better, enjoying a convincing 7-5 6-2 win.

Despite the at times rather uncomfortable conditions, the spectators came in masses and mere rain can’t stop Queenslanders from enjoying their tennis. Even though the tournament is only in its early stages, long queues formed at the outside courts, since the amount of fan interest exceeded the seating capacity at most matches.

The tennis was well worth the wait, as the outside courts were scene of two of the day’s most exciting matches, involving two German players.

The first was Sabine Lisicki — the 2013 Wimbledon finalist fell prey to Khazakstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova. Shvedova, who played her way through the tournament’s qualifying rounds, failed to win a single game in the first set, as Lisicki edged out a 6-0 lead. Shvedova’s luck turned around as the match progressed, she took the following sets 7-5 6-4 and Sabine Lisicki’s boyfriend Oliver Pocher had to witness a less than stellar start into the new season for the German fan favorite.

With two popular German players already eliminated following Petkovic’s loss yesterday, it was once again on Angelique Kerber to deliver results for her country. As usual, Kerber did not disappoint, playing a particulary gutsy match against Caroline Garcia, edging out the French youngster 6-4 6-3.

In the evening, 2014 Brisbane International finalist Victoria Azarenka played the first night session match of the tournament, starting her quest to make up lost ground in the rankings at prime time. Having recently dropped out of the Top 40, Azarenka now faces very capable opponents in early rounds and Monday was no exception wtih Karolina Pliskova waiting for the former world #1. Having enjoyed her breakout year in 2014 by winning two WTA tournaments and reaching three more finals, Pliskova is now 23rd in the rankings. The Czech youngster proved the expected tough opponent and the fans in Brisbane were treated to a thriller of a match. After taking the first set quite comfortably 6-4 , Azarenka failed to close the deal in the second set, failing to capitalize on a match point. The ensuing tiebreak was won by Pliskova, forcing a third set. After 3:17 hours of exciting tennis, Pliskova took the final set 6-4, met by the thunderous cheering from the packed Pat Rafter Arena crowd.

Tuesday at the 2015 Brisbane International will finally see the tournament’s top seed in action. Maria Sharapova will be the main event on center court in the evening, facing Yaroslava Shveoda.

Furthermore, fans will also get to enjoy the battle between two promising youngsters, as Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic will face Elina Svitolina. For all of that and more, make sure to keep checking back to Women’s Tennis Blog all week!

Main-draw play gets underway in Brisbane

Sunday at the 2015 Brisbane International Tennis provided an exciting mix of off-court fun and on-court surprise as the first WTA Premier tournament of the brand new season kicked into high gear right away.

Before it was time for the all-serious business of main draw tennis, the day started on a light-hearted note with the Suncorp Kids Tennis Spectacular inside Pat Rafter Arena.

The plenty of kids in the audience got to enjoy the presence of comic favorites like Spongebob Squarepants and tennis royalty including Martina Hingis, Bethanie Mattek-Sands & Victoria Azarenka, who participated in a fun-filled three-versus three-match.

The two-time Australian Open champion embraced the occasion as usual, entertaining the kids and sharing plenty of laughs with the fans and the teen icons on court.

While it was all fun and games inside Pat Rafter Arena, the qualifying stage completed on the outside courts as Yaroslava Shvedova & Daria Gavrilova managed to clinch their spots in the Brisbane International Tennis main draw.

Once kids day was over, it was time for serious business inside Pat Rafter Arena and the first main draw match of the year already had plenty of surprise in store as wildcard player Ajla Tomljanovic beat Jelena Jankovic 7-6 6-0 to kick off the 2015 edition of the tournament.

Playing for Australia since this season, Tomljanovic made the most of her newly-found home crowd, playing a gutsy match against the former #1, as Jankovic struggled with the lack of match practice due to her off-season injury.

Afterwards, Jankovic opened up to the press, talking about her back injury that prevented her from doing the most menial tasks such as brushing her teeth or putting on her shoes. “All my muscles disappeared, I looked like jelly!” the Serbian quipped, citing her lack of match play as main reason for today’s loss.

The surprises inside Pat Rafter Arena kept on coming as Andrea Petkovic failed to win her first-round match against Kaia Kanepi by 4-6 7-5 4-6, while Sam Stosur once more failed to make it past round one in an Australian tournament, losing to Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 4-6 5-7.

Sunday also had a very interesting doubles pairing in store, as Ana Ivanovic & Angelique Kerber completed their first doubles match of the season, beating Klaudia Jans-Iganik & Andreja Klepac.

The Serbian-German pairing was not just met by plenty of Australian sun and packed grandstands, Ivanovic’s boyfriend Bastian Schweinsteiger was on hand as well, as the German football superstar cheered on his sweetheart together with Ivanovic’s coaching team.

The action will continue inside Queensland Tennis Centre on Monday, as Victoria Azarenka, Dominika Cibulkova, Angelique Kerber & Sabine Lisicki among others will kick off the quest for their first title in 2015.

Top players prepare in Brisbane

With the start of main draw action at the 2015 Brisbane International Tennis being just one day away, Saturday was all about preparation for the tournament’s marquee players.

Among them was last year’s finalist Victoria Azarenka, the Belorussian spent an extended time out on Queensland Tennis Centre’s practice courts, hitting with Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro.

Having been sidelined for most of the 2014 season due to a foot injury, the two-time Australian Open champion recently dropped out of the Top 40 and will start her quest to make up the lost ground in Brisbane.

While some of her opponents were putting in the hours on the practice courts, top seed Maria Sharapova met the media, discussing her new year’s resolutions and her off-season activities with the press.

Sharapova’s press conference had a very light-hearted moment, as one journalist asked the Russian about her upcoming Davis Cup duties, of course referring to Sharapova’s Fed Cup participation in February.

It wasn’t all fun & games out on the courts though, as the second round of qualifying wrapped up on Saturday, leaving eight players that will duel for the four main draw spots tomorrow.

One player that won’t be in the final round of qualifying tomorrow is Kimiko Date-Krumm. The Japanese WTA legend lost her Q2 match to reigning Australian Open juniors singles & doubles champion Elizaveta Kulichkova 6-4 6-0, failing to win a single game in the second set.

Sunday will be a very busy day at the 2015 Brisbane International with both the qualifying finals and the start of main draw play scheduled. Furthermore, Pat Rafter Arena will be the scene of the tournament’s annual kids day, an event that is a favorite with fans, players & media alike.

Needless to say, Women’s Tennis Blog will take you right to the action all week so keep checking back for more from Brisbane!

Busy Friday at Brisbane International

The 2015 WTA season is officially underway, as qualifying action at the 2015 Brisbane International Tennis has kicked off.

The Queensland Tennis Centre was buzzing with activity on Friday, as 32 players started their quest to make the tournament’s main draw that will commence on Sunday. The 16 matches provided plenty of action to keep spectators entertained, especially since several local Australian girls were in the spotlight today.

The first Aussie to take the court was Daria Gavrilova, the Russia-born player who has recently won the Australian Open wildcard playoff tournament, earning her a main draw spot in this month’s Grand Slam tournament. Gavrilova’s victorious ways continued on Friday, as the 20-year old beat Danka Kovinic 7-6 6-3, getting her one step closer to the Brisbane Tennis International main draw.

Following Gavrilova was an all-Aussie battle featuring Anastasia Rodionova and Storm Sanders. After losing the first set, the 20-year old Sanders rallied back to force a deciding set against her experienced countrywoman. The third set was a very close affair, as Storm Sanders pushed the 12-years older Rodionova to the brink of defeat before Rodionova’s experience prevailed.

Another Rodionova was in the spotlight later — Alia Rodinova tried to follow her sister into the second round of qualifying. Rodionova’s match against Kimiko Date-Krumm ended in a remarkable fashion, but certainly not the way the Australian fans had hoped for. At first, the match between the Japanese veteran and the local favorite was usual business with Date-Krumm taking the first set 6-3 and working up a comfortable lead in the second set. Date-Krumm failed to close out the match and Rodionova fought hard to stay in the match until a controversial line call at 5-3 in the second set. With no hawkeye available during the qualifying rounds, all arguing was in vain as Date-Krumm sealed the deal with the following match point, sending Rodionova into another fit as she declined to shake the umpires hand after the match.

Other victorious players on Friday included Poland’s Paula Kania, Maryna Zanevska, Virginie Razzano and Leisa Tsurenko. The Ukranian beat Germany’s Tatiana Maria, who’s working her way back up the rankings following her pregnancy time-out early into the 2014 season.

The second round of qualifying will continue tomorrow, as Brisbane gears up for the start of main draw play on Sunday. Keep checking back for all the latest coverage from Down Under!

15 minutes with Maria Sharapova in Brisbane

The 2015 WTA season is due to kick off in Brisbane tomorrow and Women’s Tennis Blog is on site, bringing you all the action from the year’s first WTA Premier tournament.

Thursday at the Queensland Tennis Centre was all about preparation, as several players practiced ahead of the tournament’s start, trying to get themselves accustomed to the scorching Brisbane heat & humidity.

Among the players putting in the hours on court ahead of the brand new season was #1 seed Maria Sharapova,as the Russian completed a two-hour practice session with coach Sven Groeneveld inside Pat Rafter Arena.

While most of Sharapova’s practice was held with prying eyes locked out, the two-time Roland Garros champion did allow the media to join her for 15 minutes of her training session.

The former Australian Open champion seemed as excited as anybody to get the new season underway, sharing plenty of smiles with her team and playfully teasing her German hitting partner Didi Kindlmann.

Once the main draw action gets underway on Sunday, Sharapova will face off with plenty of other WTA household names, including Ana Ivanovic, Angelique Kerber, Sabine Lisicki, Andrea Petkovic as well as last year’s finalist Victoria Azarenka, who’s kicking off her campaign to get back up the rankings following a lengthy foot injury that sidelined her for the majority of the 2014 season.

Schweinsteiger accompanies Ivanovic in Australia

In early November, Bastian Schweinsteiger visited Ana Ivanovic‘s hometown of Belgrade to celebrate her 27th birthday and now that the German soccer player is accompanying the Serbian tennis star in her preparations for the 2015 season, it seems that the couple has decided to more freely expose their relationship.

Ivanovic and Schweinsteiger take a photo with a fan

Ana and Bastian took this photo with a fan on their flight to Melbourne and, as far as I can recall, this is their first non-paparazzi public photo together.

A couple of days later, a Twitter share revealed that Bastian is supporting Ana at Melbourne Park, during her practice sessions. Ana will open 2015 at the Brisbane International, where she will also play doubles with world No.9 Angelique Kerber (remember, Women’s Tennis Blog will also be in Brisbane, providing daily photos and updates!).

Lucky in Love – tennis apparel brand impresses with variety and beauty of designs

Even though I’ve been partnered with Tennis Warehouse for quite some time, I usually just visit their website for a quick check of possible new launches of top brands. Now that it’s off-season, I’ve had some extra time to explore their full offer and I was impressed when I discovered the brand called Lucky in Love. They have such a wide array of cuts and prints, plus they are not short of simple solids either! They have something for virtually anyone, as currently there are about 150 clothing items on display and available for purchase, which include so many colors, countless prints, and all types of tops and bottoms. I can totally see a top player standing out in these clothes.

Top and skirts - Lucky in Love

What first attracted my attention was this Lucky in Love Tropical Long-Sleeve Crop Top, featuring a print that combines navy stripes, tennis grasscourts and flowers in a wonderful mix. I find it unique and exotic and can definitely see it on a WTA player, like Jelena Jankovic or Maria Sharapova, for example. There’s a matching Lucky in Love Tropical Flounce Skirt, including a mesh panel at waist, while you can go for an ever better pair, with the navy and chartreuse Lucky in Love Tropical Scallop Skirt that has a layered hem with color-blocking mesh panels.

Lucky in Love tanks

There are numerous tanks to combine with the skirts (double racer, high-neck, V-neck, and more), as well as cute cap-sleeve and long-sleeve tops. This was the Lucky in Love Tropical Punch Group, while my second favorite is this Mayan-inspired collection.

Lucky in Love - blue tankLucky in Love - mayan cami tank

There are so many styles and cuts you can choose from, but I’ve singled out my favorite combos: the Lucky in Love Core V-Neck Tank – Ocean paired with the Mayan Tall Border Skirt and the Lucky in Love Mayan Cami Tank to go with the white Core Pleat Layer Skirt.

Olive-based collection called the Lucky in Love Geo Camo Group is also nice, as well as the pink lace group of clothes.

To illustrate how many prints this brand has available, have a look at just a selection of their skirts! But what I like the most is that it’s not all about busy prints, you can perfectly combine them with solid pieces and if you don’t like prints at all, Lucky in Love has made sure not to leave you unsatisfied either!

Radwanska’s new dress? Lotto shocks with black lace all over!

This has not been confirmed anywhere yet, but it is unlikely that these are not Lotto‘s new tennis clothes and that Agnieszka Radwanska will not be their prime promoter. Women’s Tennis Blog’s reader Sorciere referred me to the pics and then I found the additional photo of the collection on Tennis Forum.

Lotto - black lace dress frontLotto - black lace dress back

Lace and women’s tennis outfits have never been strangers to each other — what first comes to my mind are Venus Williams’ memorable EleVen lace dresses of a few years ago (have a look at my complete overview of the American’s 2011 outfits, as well as the 2010 ones), while Denise Cronwall is a tennis clothing designer also characteristic for finding inspiration in lace. After years of dull designs, this year Lotto made a major shift in its approach to tennis clothing, as evidenced by Aga’s 2014 outfits, and, as expected, the brand will continue the path of fashion risks in 2015.

Lotto tennis collection - Agnieszka Radwanska

A black dress for the Australian Open is an extremely weird choice, but maybe the Pole will opt for the separates which exist in lighter colors and also feature lace on the back, while she’ll wear the dress at some other tournaments.

What do you think of Lotto’s experiment with lace? I like the surprise factor (the back of the dress is especially shocking) and I like the item’s uniqueness and glamor. Cons are that it looks too much as a night club dress and isn’t really convenient for everyday practice.
